Quotes:

"Because of my size, I guess I'm more of a power receiver. But the best part of my game are my hands. I'm going to go get the ball, no matter what. I might not run by you, but I can overpower most corners, and when the ball is in the air, I feel like it's mine.

(On why he chose SMU): When my dad was in high school, he was recruited real hard by SMU but didn't end up playing there. For Vincent and me to go there, it's like we're living something our dad didn't get to do.

I love the fact that it (SMU) is close to home, because my family will be able to come see us play. (2003 signees) Zach Hall and Lucky DeLay and Zach's brother (2005 commit) Chris -- they're like family to Vincent and me. (Lucky played for 'the enemy' -- Irving MacArthur -- but we love him anyway.) Having those guys all on the team is something most guys don't get to have. I'm real lucky to have that at SMU."

Interviews:

Blinn Junior College head coach Scott Maxfield: - "Bobby was a slot receiver for us before he got hurt. He's a big, physical receiver with real good hands, and he's a really good route runner. SMU is a great choice for him. I know several of the coaches up there, and they're terrific coaches. They'll do a great job with him, and I think he'll open a lot of eyes when he gets up there and when he's healthy. He has the ability to be a really good receiver."

Irving head coach Jim Bennett: - "The best thing about Bobby is his hands -- if you can get the ball near him, he'll make the catch. He can dive and make the 'circus catch' and he makes them routine. He flat-out won some games for us -- I think it was against Abilene, and he had three touchdowns by himself.

"He's a big target who uses his body very well. He places his body between the ball and the defender, and he's so big they have almost no chance to get to the ball. He's legitimately 6'4" and might get to 6'5" and I could see him getting up to around 220 pounds.

I would think he's got a chance to play early at SMU. A lot of the SMU receivers are 'Smurfs' -- I'm not saying they're not good, but they aren't a real big group. They're good -- they can all run, but a lot of them are 5'9" or 5'10". Bobby's big, and he 'plays quick.'

(On the benefit of enrolling in January) Having the chance to go through spring training with the team will be a big advantage for Bobby. The biggest challenge will be to learn the new offensive system, but once he does, I think he'll do a great job at SMU.":

Phil Bennett on Bobby Chase:

"Bobby is a tall wide receiver. You'll see that he only caught seven passes this Blinn Junior College, but that's a little misleading. He cracked the starting lineup as a freshman over a returning incumbent, but then in his first game he injured his ankle and missed the rest of the season. He's a guy we wanted last year, and we told him that since we took so many linemen last year, we'd hold a spot for him this year. We wanted to get bigger at the wide receiver spot, and he's a big guy with great hands. He's a guy we think has a real chance to contribute."

Four games into the 2006 SMU Mustang's football season, Bobby Chase is trying to continue his past success and lead his team to a bowl game.

As the Mustang's offensive MVP both of the last two years, the senior wide receiver is set to have another solid year on the playing field. Last year he had a team high 39 catches for 625 yards. He became the 19th player in SMU history to break the career 1,000-yard receiving mark and was named to the 3rd team All-Conference USA.

Chase also gained national recognition for his play by making ESPN's Sport Center's Top Ten plays of the Week twice. The first time was for his game winning catch against UAB as time expired and the other for his circus catch for a score against UTEP.

Chase attributes all the success to God.

"God gives us gifts and so I give him all the glory," Chase said. "He gave me something I passionately love in football and I play every game for him."

Chase, now a senior, started playing football 14 years ago in Irving. His uncle and father introduced him to the game and continually helped him and his little brother Vincent to practice and improve. Eventually Bobby went to Blinn College in south Texas to play football.

While he was there, his brother Vincent began receiving opportunities to play football from schools all over the country. The two brothers wanted to play together, so Vincent accepted an offer from SMU and Bobby transferred here.

Chase said that SMU was the only Division I school that would accept both of the brothers.

"It's worked out for the best," Chase said.

In the two years the Chase brothers have been at SMU, the team has continued to get better. Two years ago the team's record was 3-8 and last year the team improved to 5-6. Increasing wins each season gives fans and critics all over the area reason to believe that this year could be a turning point for the program.

Quarterback Justin Willis is confident about his team's chance this season. He believes that this team is more athletic than it has ever been.
